The Signal Processing research line comprises the analysis and synthesis of signals involved in the interaction between humans and computers, focusing on the two main avenues of sensation, i.e. sound and image.
- Speech processing: text-to-speech synthesis, speaker verification and speech recognition.
- Environmental sounds analysis: automatically determine the type of acoustic environment the user is immersed in (sound source recognition, soundscape identification).
- Image processing: computer vision (face and gesture detection and recognition, text recognition in natural scenes) and image synthesis (generation of realistic virtual avatars, integration of synthetic objects in real images via augmented reality).
- Multimodal processing: emotion recognition from image, text (via sentiment analysis) and speech, and indexing multimedia contents (e.g. geo-tagging of online videos based on their visual and acoustic contents).
